The domestic and international commercial prospects for advanced transportation fuels have been increasing tremendously compelled primarily by reducing the environmental impact of transportation and acquiring energy security. To date, synthetic paraffinic oil and hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) are the only alternative fuels that have been certified by ASTM. Camelina oil contains a high percentile of polyunsaturated fatty acids and holds a promise of novel alternative hydrocarbon fuel and oleochemicals. We have developed a method of catalytic defragmentation of camelina fatty acid into medium chain olefins (C6 to C12). These fragmented olefins can lead to novel paraffinic fuel upon further chemical reactions which will open up the new route that will feed into conversion of other renewable biomass to fuels and chemicals. In this presentation the results and discussion of the finding will be presented.
