Lignins, due to their low reactivity, are usually burnt to recover energy, when selective conversion strategies are used to produce biofuels from lignocellulosic materials. A better understanding of the reactions of lignins is needed in order to maximize the yield of desirable products and avoid unwanted products in the final material. Many speculations have been made in order to explain how lignins deconstruct to their monomers; wheterr or not gas phase kinetics play an important role in the overall thermal decomposition process is still an open question. Due to the intrinsic complexity of lignins, model compounds are needed in order to perform electronic structure calculations and predict rate constants.
