The main objective was to develop technologies and competences enabling the production of novel composite materials, in which wood derived lignin and cellulose fiber are the main constituents and with entirely bio-based composition. The melt processability of thermoplastic lignins was demonstrated, and lignins were plasticized with biobased plasticizers to ease the processing of the material. Lignin composites reinforced with cellulosic fibers were produced. Suitable, novel bio-based plasticizers were found and the plasticized lignin was melt compounded with cellulose fibers and test samples were injection moulded in pilot scale. DSC and HDT analyses were conducted and mechanical properties were measured. A clear improvement of mechanical properties over materials produced in previously reported studies with non-renewable plasticisers was demonstrated.
