Complexes containing N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have been prevalent in metal-mediated transformations, whereas complexes containing the analogous N-heterocyclic phosphenium (NHP) ligand have only recently been explored.  Our group has synthesized late transition metal complexes ligated by both tridentate NHC and NHP ligands utilizing a tridentate pincer ligand framework, and we have explored the differing reactivity and redox behavior of these complexes. Current research into the catalytic and metal-mediated activations of small molecules by NHC and NHP ligated group 10 complexes will be discussed.
