A quantitative scale of aromaticity has not been defined. Antiaromatic species provide a greater dispersion of properties such as chemical shift and may provide support for this scale, which is part of a larger continuum that includes antiaromaticity. The antiaromaticity of cycloheptatrienyl dianion dimers, 1, 2,   and 3,  can be evaluated in terms of their structural, energetic, and especially their magnetic characteristics. The antiaromaticity and the synthesis of 2  will be discussed, in the context of 1  and 3  .
