Over the last decade, palladium catalyzed coupling reactions have become increasingly utilized in organic synthesis for the formation of carbon-carbon or carbon-heteroatom bonds. New approaches are being pursued to minimize the use of traditional organic solvents, develop recyclable catalysts, and to limit the overall production of environmentally harmful waste material. One way that this can be achieved is through the synthesis of water-soluble phosphine ligands for catalysis in water or biphasic systems. We have designed and synthesized new water-soluble ligands based on the need for steric bulk and electron richness to promote the catalytic cycle. The design also utilizes the flexible coordinating ability of a benzyl moiety that is substituted with a hydrophilic sulfonate group. We will be studying the activity of these new ligands in palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions to help elucidate the role of the different groups on the ligand in promoting catalysis.
