Palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions are instrumental for carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bond formation. Steric and electronic properties of phosphine ligands play important roles in determining catalyst efficiency. Previously, neopentyl phosphines have been shown to be efficient ligands in cross-coupling reactions. The synthesis of new palladium complexes with neophylphosphines is shown (neophyl = 2-methyl-2-phenylpropyl). The neophylphosphines are analogous to the neopentylphosphines, but the neophyl group has the potential to coordinate to the palladium through the aryl group. The palladium/neophyl phosphine complexes have been used in Buchwald-Hartwig amination and diaryl ether syntheses.
