N-Arylimidazoles continue to be interesting compounds based on their biological activities and their potential use in the synthesis of valuable N-heterocylic carbene ligands. Currently, the most direct procedures for the synthesis of bulky N-arylimidazoles, those containing meta substituents, require the use of formaldehyde. Since formaldehyde has become highly regulated,we have developed a modification of the procedure that no longer requires formaldehyde. As an additional advantage, phosphoric acid is no longer required either.
