The aromatic characteristics of porphyrins are often attributed to the presence of an 18pi electron delocalization pathway. Recently, a dideazaporphyrin was reported that retained porphyrin-like properties but no longer possessed two of the pyrrolic subunits. In order to further investigate this system, new examples of dideazaporphyrins 1  have been targeted for synthesis. Pyrrolic intermediates have been prepared using the Barton-Zard reaction and converted into the related bis(acrylaldehydes) 2 . It is anticipated that McMurry coupling will afford the desired dideazaporphyrins 1 .
