Purine gels possess many medicinal applications, such as anti-viral remedies and possible drug delivery components. The challenge in producing guanosine gels is due to the unstable formation of G-quartets. However, these gels may be stabilized by the addition of an aromatic group to the 8th position of guanosine. The proposed groups used include phenyl, thiophene, pyrrole and furan. Future research entails experimentation with guanosine gels in various concentrations of Na+ and K+ media. Additionally, the stability of hydrogels versus the group size will determine the size threshold.
