(A) Graphene nano-ribbons (GNRs) and graphene quantum dots (GQDs) � single-atom-thick nanostructures of sp2 hybridized carbon atoms � exhibit shape and size dependent electrical and optical properties, which can be tuned over a wide range. This talk will demonstrate a route to produce monodisperse GNs with shapes of square, rectangle, ribbon and triangle; and size 'controlled' at 5 nm resolution. �Thin GNR films� exhibit a bandgap reduction with GNR-width (35, 10 and 0 meV for 15, 25 and 50 nm GNRs). Electron-tunneling through GQDs will be demonstrated. (B) Graphene's high quantum capacitance and the lateral charge-confinement enables detection of mechanics of tethered molecular. Here, graphenic sheets are functionalized with azobenzene (coverage = 13%, with average domain size of 9.5 nm), which are externally isomerized from their trans state to cis state. The conformation-change of 100 azobenzene molecules produces one unit of hole-carrier. The carrier-polarity is governed by the original molecular orientation.
