The scope of potential functions for engineered nanostructures continues to expand, covering areas such as regenerative medicine, precisely targeted therapies for disease, and many other non-medical functions where materials come in contact with biological systems. Their use in regenerative medicine could have extraordinary impact on quality of life and the cost of health care, both issues of critical importance when the average lifespan of world populations continues to rise. This lecture describes strategies that utilize supramolecular self-assembly to create bioactive and biomimetic nanostructures, virus-like objects, or cell-like microcapsules containing nanoscale filaments. These systems can function as artificial extracellular environments to trigger regeneration or deliver therapies. The lecture will discuss their use in neural, cardiovascular, and connective tissue targets.
