Isomeric structures of graphene and graphene nanoribbons (GNR), with different ring size combinations, gained several interests due to their aesthetically pleasing structures and potential unique properties. Herein we report on synthesis approaches towards useful precursors for isomeric 2D graphene structures based on the selective functionalization of biphenylene resulting in, e.g., GNRs consisting out of four-, six- and eight-membered rings (Figure left). These structures could be further extended along the vertical direction to vary the width of the GNRs (Figure right).
