Graphene/metal ferrite nanocomposites, GR/MFe2O4 (M= Co, Cu, Zn, Ni) were synthesized by the in-situ hydrolysis and poly-condensation of the metal chloride precursor and graphite oxide, GO in a polyol medium. The products were characterized using FTIR, SEM, TGA and powder XRD. The magnetic properties of the nanocomposites were also studied using SQUID. Our results shows the one step in-situ reduction of GO to graphene and deposition of metal ferrite nanoparticles on the surface of the graphene sheets. The results from SQUID measurements show that GR/CoFe2O4 has the highest magnetization amongst the transition metals studied. These functionalized graphene naocomposites have potential applications in electromagnetic devices, in biomedicine and as nanocatalysts in synthetic organic chemistry. Evidence to support the applications will be presented.
