Our goal is the development an efficient synthesis of cyclic alkynes via an intramolecular Nicholas reaction and subsequent oxidative decomplexation. Cyclic alkynes are of interest because of their use in strain-promoted bioorthogonal click chemistry. Syntheses of 8- and 9-membered cyclic alkynes generally prove difficult, but we have successfully prepared the corresponding cobalt-complexed alkynes in high yields. Currently, we are investigating possible oxidative decomplexation procedures.
