 Our present research targets the synthesis of mechanically interlocked polymeric architectures, and is motivated by their unusual and interesting behaviors.  We have designed a series of ditopic monomers based on the metal-binding 2,6-bisbenzimidazolylpyridine (Bip) unit, which upon the simple addition of metal ions self-assemble to produce metallo-supramolecular oligomers/polymers. This species, under dilute conditions, can potentially be ring-closed to yield oligomeric interlocked architectures.  Monotopic and ditopic macrocycles have also been designed and synthesized that incorporate this Bip unit.  The monotopic macrocycle was demonstrated to act as a chain terminator and can selectively control the end group of interolocked architectures as demonstrated with the synthesis of a series of fully characterized [3]catenanes. Furthermore, our ditopic macrocycles were designed to produce alternating metallo-supramolecular polymers.  The talk will discuss our progress towards the realization of higher order catenanes using this metal-ligand template directed approach.
