This contribution will highlight how ultrafast time-resolved IR Spectroscopy (TRIR) is a powerful tool for probing the structure and reactivity of excited states, as well as the characterization of reactive intermediates and the elucidation of reaction mechanisms and this presentation will focus on probing either the C-H Activation of alkanes, using  CpRh(CO)2 and related complexes and how spin-changes in organometallic reactions affects reactivity.  We have used TRIR in both conventional and supercritical fluids to identify in these reactions.  We have probed the factors which govern the C-H activation reaction by elucidating of Tp'Rh(CO)2and Cp'Rh(CO)2 showing that the nature of the alkane governs these reactions in different ways.  For the spin-change reactions for reactions such as triplet Fe(CO)4 reacting to singlet Fe(CO)4(L) that the ability to perform ultrafast reactions in solvents such as supercritical Xe and Kr can be used to unravel the factors governing the reactivity of these systems.
