With a series of Cp*Ir based catalysts, NaIO4 is a milder and more efficient terminal oxidant for CH hydroxylation than the Ce(IV) oxidants typically used. C1-C3 alkanes were oxidized: methane to give CO2, ethane to give AcOH and propane to give acetone. Cyclooctane gave cyclooctanone and some 4- and 5-diones. (-)-Ambroxide was selectively oxidized to Scaleolide in 70% yield. 4-Ethylbenzene-4-sulfonate was preferentially oxidized versus water oxidation to O2 by a factor of 104. Nanoparticle catalysis was eliminated for most catalysts by dynamic light scattering, among other tests.
