Synthetic liquid fuels could be used in the future to replace conventional oil-derived fuels. Research on synthetic jet fuels has rapidly increased over the last ten years while almost no kinetic model was available for modeling their combustion over a broad range of conditions, i.e. from low-temperature cool-flame to high temperature oxidation regime. Air transportation fuels are complex mixtures of hundreds of medium molecular weight hydrocarbons that participate in thousands of chemical reactions during their combustion. In synthetic jet fuels obtained from non-oil feedstocks, the main chemical classes present are iso-alkanes, n-alkanes, cyclic alkanes, naphteno-aromatics, and a small fraction of aromatics. Their relative importance differs from one source to another. To simplify the computations, the fuel is usually represented by surrogates with a limited number of constituents.  Recent experimental and modeling results obtained for the oxidation of a series of synthetic jet fuels (gas-to-liquid, coal-to-liquid, oxygenated blends) are presented.
