A tetraphenyl-substituted [12]cycloparaphenylene (CPP) has been synthesized as a first step towards the realization of a bottom-up synthesis of an open carbon nanotube. Though the synthesis of a fully phenyl-substituted CPP has yet to be realized, it is inevitable that this molecule will succumb to the power of organic synthesis. However, the achievement of large carbon nanotube fragments, and ultimately a carbon nanotube, through this class of molecules requires a methodology that fuses each independent phenyl ring into one polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon. This talk will discuss the search for this methodology through the synthesis of a variety of unique cycloparaphenylenes, along with the characterization of reaction products from experimentation upon these unique macrocycles.
