Cellulose nanofibrils provide an excellent template for preparation of functional materials. In this study, we demonstrate and evaluate methods to prepare temperature-responsive cellulosic materials using N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) which undergoes a reversible transition from swollen to shrunken state at 32�C. Such materials can be used, for example, in various kinds of filters for temperature induced cleaning. Different approaches for grafting of NIPAM were evaluated. These include , for example, grafting NIPAM directly onto cellulose or using xylan based spacers. The behaviour of the modified nanocellulosic materials were analysed using quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring. This methods enables the in situ investigation of e.g. conformational changes taking place due to the changes in ambient temperature.
