Nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) production demands high mechanical energy and therefore pretreatment of the raw materials is required in order to reduce energy consumption.  A novel pretreatment for producing NFC is presented. It includes key chemicals that assist in cell wall deconstruction. Fully bleached birch pulp was treated with the proposed pretreatment technology to demonstrate the savings in energy upon application of the proposed methods. Control tests with aqueous solutions of the same chemicals were carried out as a reference and the products of microfluidization were analyzed by AFM and complementary techniques
