In the paper industry, the coating process involves the application of a thin film of functional materials to the surface of paper to impart certain qualities, including printability and liquid/gas barrier properties. A new material, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), which have attracted wide attention due to its high strength, low density, environmentally friendly nature and biocompatibility, have great potential to be used as a functional coating material. In this paper, CNCs were prepared from softwood pulp by enzymatic hydrolysis by two kinds of commercial enzymes CellicTM CTec (aggressive cellulases and high level of �-glucosidase) and HTec (endoxylanase). In this study, filtration, which is the last step in the CNC formation will be performed on commercial linerboards (recycled 26#, 35#, and 56#). The properties of linerboards before and after CNC coating will be characterized by paper structural and mechanical tests to assess the effect of CNC coating on the strength and barrier properties of investigated linerboards.
