Novel ethylene-halide copolymers synthesized via acyclic diene methatesis polymerization (ADMET) present an ethylene backbone and a halogen (F, Cl or Br) placed regularly at a precise distance along the chain backbone. We have studied the crystalline structure and melting properties of a series of these polyolefins crystallized from quiescent melts under rapid or isothermal conditions. In addition to halogen size, crystalline packing is strongly affected by crystallization kinetics. Exquisite kinetic control of the crystallization in novel polyolefins of this nature allows strategies for generating nanostructures at the lamellar and sub-lamellar level not feasible in classical branched polyethylenes.
