Opportunities to carry out interdisciplinary research, familiarity with industry culture, establishment of a co-mentor relationship and accessibility to an experimental/theoretical infrastructure are all available to students with the establishment of an industry/university collaboration.  In addition, it adds an experiential component to a student's academic career that provides a perspective on where research can have a commercial impact.  The advantages of these collaborations for the senior investigators can also be far reaching and their combined skill set and resources can often be leveraged to obtain additional research funds from state and federal agencies, making it a WIN-WIN proposition. In this context, certain interdisciplinary research topics are attractive to both the academic and industrial enterprise and some examples of past successes will be described.
