Chemical Looping Combustion (CLC) is a novel technology for efficient and clean combustion with inherent CO2 capture.  We have recently demonstrated extension of the CLC principle to CO2 activation by using CO2 as the oxidant in Chemical Looping Dry Reforming (CLDR). Here, we report on the use of a reducible oxide matrix (CeO2) for Fe-based carriers in thermogravimetric (TGA) and fixed-bed reactor tests for CLDR, with the aim to address the low activity, susceptibility for coking, and low stability of Fe-based carriers. We demonstrate that appropriately nanostructured Fe/CeO2 carriers not only show near-complete carrier conversion during methane reduction with minimal coking, but excellent regenerability under CO2 oxidation. These results thus further confirm the potential of CLDR for CO2 activation and utilization, and identify a suitable candidate material to realize this potential.
