As a high-surface-area and electrically conductive material, graphene including chemically modified graphene, and negative curvature carbons, are promising as electrode materials for ultracapacitors and batteries, and as component materials in fuel cells. Graphene/Graphite foam provides an excellent framework for attaching various nanostructures for use as a composite electrode in ultracapacitors and/or batteries. Pristine graphene grown by CVD methods in large area, particularly when isotopically pure (and its isotopically pure multilayer variants and graphite) are promising for heat spreading/thermal management applications. I will cover in this talk a variety of current research projects underway in my group related to energy storage and thermal management, and also describe what I think are some important new directions in carbon and first row element research for the next 10-20 years, and will suggest that once such materials are made, they will play an important important applications in energy storage and thermal management.
