In 2012, the National Science Foundation's Research Experiences for Undergraduates (NSF REU) program marked its 25th anniversary.  REU programs have evolved over the years and new initiatives have emerged related to various aspects of REU programs including: assessment and evaluation, ethics training, tracking of students, and recruiting underrepresented students.  Novel models for REU programs have been developed such as: international REU programs, REU programs exclusively for community college students, REU programs for students with disabilities and REU programs for student/mentor pairs, among others.  The essential components of a successful NSF REU program will be discussed in the context of writing a compelling grant for funding.  Finally, the role of the REU Chemistry Leadership Group and available resources for current and future REU program directors will be presented.
