We have achieved trifluoromethylations, both with and without simultaneous introduction of other functionalities, in high chemo-, regio- and stereoselectivity. The reactions are very robust and can be performed in presence of water and air. Both alkenes and alkynes can be functionalized in synthetically useful yields. The reactions proceed under mild conditions using commercially available copper salts and trifluoromethyl sources. Mechanistic studies indicate that the reaction proceeds via a series of single electron transfer steps.
