There has been enormous interest on self-healing corrosion protection recently. We designed and synthesized novel high-pH-responsive polymer nanoparticles (100-400 nm in diameter) containing a corrosion inhibitor (benzotriazole, BTA) with payload of up to 13 wt% from a simple phase inversion method, which have been successfully incorporated into coatings for self-healing corrosion protection. The high-pH responsive nanoparticles remained intact in water at pH = 8, whereas at higher pH (= 9) the polymer particles disintegrated into small molecules due to hydrolysis, allowing BTA to be continuously released. Epoxy coatings with BTA-containing nanoparticles (0.1 wt% BTA) have demonstrated excellent corrosion protection for steel.
