The photochemical oxidation of amines represents a powerful method for direct C-H functionalization via the generation of iminium ion intermediates.  In this regard, molecular complexity can be generated in an atom economical fashion under mild reaction conditions. The use of photoredox catalysts enables the in situ conversion of tertiary amines to reactive iminium ions that are then trapped with a variety of nucleophiles to provide a diverse array of structures. Recent synthetic and mechanistic efforts from our group along with enantioselective bond construction will be presented.
