The transfer of hydrogen from alcohols to unsaturated reactants triggers generation of aldehyde-organometal pairs that combine to form products of formal carbinol CH-functionalization. Such transformations enable carbonyl addition from the alcohol oxidation level in the absence of premetallated reagents. Based on this new pattern of reactivity, a broad family of catalytic enantioselective C-C bond formations were developed.
