Piano stool Cp-Rh(III) complexes are efficient precatalysts for heteroatom directed C-H activations of aromatic and vinyl systems.  We have developed a family of transformations targeting heterocycle synthesis by a sequence of N-H and C-H activations followed by the insertion of a small molecule.  Mechanistic observations guide the development of novel ligand scaffolds in attempts to improve and generalize the reaction.  Reaction development, mechanistic observations and recent progress will be discussed.
