Computed tomography (CT) is one of the most commonly used medical imaging techniques. In the past ten years, nanoparticles have frequently been developed as contrast agents for various medical imaging techniques. However, relatively few nanoparticle contrast agents have been developed for CT. Therefore, we are working to bring the benefits of nanoparticles to the area of CT contrast agents.In this presentation I will describe our latest results in developing gold and bismuth nanoparticles contrast media for CT. To form the finished agent, the metal cores are integrated with lipids, polymers, proteins, fluorophores, drugs and other functional components. The applications of these multi-functional nanostructures in targeted imaging, cell tracking and as 'theranostic' agents in cardiovascular disease and cancer will be described. Furthermore, their use with novel CT methodologies, such as multi-color CT, will be discussed.
