We report several neutral polydentate ligands containing phenol binding groups. The Mn(II) complexes with these ligands display high relaxivities for mononuclear magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents. The coordination to Mn(II) also activates the phenolic portions of the ligands for reaction with biologically relevant oxidants. With less coordinating ligands, the compounds are sensitive to O2. With more highly coordinating ligands, the phenols will rapidly oxidize only in the presence of H2O2 or another reactive oxygen species. The exact oxidation reaction that occurs can be controlled through manipulation of the ligand framework.
