Chloramines are regularly used as a disinfectant in water treatment facilities. Since chloramines have a longer residence time and the byproducts formed are less detrimental, they are usually preferred over chlorine. We have investigated the kinetics of monochloramine, dichloramine, and trichloramine speciation under different pH ranges. Under advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) used by the Orange County Water District, the speciation of chloramines is still unclear at various concentrations and pH ranges. The goal of this project was mimic the chloramine ratios used by water treatment facilities and understand the kinetics of their speciation at pH 5 to 9 in real-world wastewaters. These experiments help increase the understanding of chloramine decomposition in the water distribution system.
