To facilitate effective hydrodechlorination of chlorinated solvents in water, we developed a new class of supported Pd catalysts by reductive deposition of Pd on two model strong-base-anion exchange resins (IRA-900 and IRA-958). With a Pd mass loading of 17% of the support mass, the supported Pd catalysts were able to facilitate rapid destruction of trichloroethylene. The observed pseudo first-order rate constant was determined to be 0.063 min-1. When the Pd loading was increased to 39%, the rate constant was increased to 0.225 min-1. A two-phase kinetic profile was observed for the supported catalysts with an induction time of ~30 min. The catalysts can be repeatedly used in multiple cycles of treatment without reactivity loss. In the presence of dissolved organic matter, the catalyst on the more hydrophobic IRA-900 offered greater catalytic activity. The resin supported Pd catalysts may serve as a class of effective catalysts in water treatment.
