Tunable chemical and physical properties of engineered materials can be achievable by varying the geometry and morphologies of nanomaterials. TiO2 nanoparticle is a very important material widely used such as in paints, implants, food, cosmetics, sensors and waste water treatment. TiO2 with nanotube and nanorods structures have been synthesized and has demonstrated superior performance than TiO2 nanoparticles. However, toxicity assessment on these nanomaterials, and more specifically TiO2 nanotube and nanorods is currently lagging behind the development of novel technologies. Nanomaterials can easily become airborne and be inhaled deep into the alveoli. In this study, TiO2 nanotubes and nanorods are grown by hydrothermal synthesis process. Tendency for the nanotubes to agglomerate is common, and a novel microfluidic device is used to achieve dispersion for days. This allowed for a relevant in vitro model to determine the toxicity of TiO2 nanotubes and nanorods in nasal epithelial cells.
