Nanoporous ceramic oxides provide a versatile foundation for making chemically selective high surface area hybrid sorbent materials.  The functional interface is provided by the self-assembly of terminally functional organosilanes along the pore walls.  By varying the nature of the interfacial ligand field it is possible to tailor the chemical selectivity of the sorbent.  Variation of the particle size and pore size distribution can also be used to tailor the sorption kinetics.  Examples will be discussed showing how these concepts can be applied towards the removal of heavy metals and radionuclides from liquid process streams.  The discussion will then turn to sorbent materials tailored for the capture of CO2 from breathing air and how these materials were optimized for the US Navy's Advanced Carbon Dioxide Removal Unit.
