Recently, the interest in tetryl cations, the heavier analogues of carbenium ions has turned from the question of their pure existence in the condensed phase to their advantageous application in synthesis and catalysis. We will report here on our recent progress in the synthesis of tetryl cations 1 -5  in their oxidation state +II and +IV and on their application in C-F, CO2 and H2 activation chemistry.
