Type I collagen is the fundamental building block of our bones, teeth, skin, tendons, and other tissues and organs. This structural protein has been studied in great detail for almost 100 years; however, recently we have been able to quantitatively examine the relationship between the nanoscale structure of the collagen fibrils and the organization into bundles at the micron scale. The relationship of nanoscale structure and bundle organization to diseases such as Osteoporosis and Osteogenesis Imperfecta will be discussed.
