Polycarbonates have received great attention in the past decades due to their wide usage in daily life.  Making polycarbonates form coupling of oxiranes and CO2 provides an environmentally benign route over the current industrial polycondensation processes. For many oxirane/CO2 couplings, it is still a challenge to control the selectivity between the formation of polycarbonate and cyclic carbonate byproduct. In order to understand the generation of cyclic carbonate during the polymerization process, the depolymerizations of various polycarbonates were investigated. Poly(indene carbonate) has shown high thermal stability, as it has the highest Tg yet published from the coupling of epoxides/ CO2 process. In this study, poly(indene carbonate) samples were treated with tetrabutylammonium azide as the decomposition initiator to study the depolymerization process. This poster will discuss the influence of added (salen)CrCl complexes, CO2 pressure, and other mechanistic investigations. Kinetic data were obtained utilizing in situ ATR-FTIR.
