Polyoxovanadates are a fascinating class of soluble metal-oxides with wide-ranging properties which make them of interest in fields as diverse as catalysis, magnetism and medicine to name but a few. Unlike conventional tungsten-based polyoxometalates however, the chemistry of vanadates has been somewhat limited by the availability of stable lacunary species capable of acting as building units in the construction of higher nuclearity clusters.Recently, our group has isolated an unprecedented series of redox-active lanthanide containing polyoxovanadates of general formula ((C4H9)4N)2[Ln(V12O32(Cl))(H2O)2(CH3CN)2]. These clusters represent a rare example of a lacunary vanadate species and, as such, can be considered to be a fundamental new polyoxovanadate building block. We will discuss how we have expanded this strategy to synthesise a unique di-substituted family of both homo- and hetero-lanthanovanadates and demonstrate how these might be further functionalised in a controllable manner by the introduction of macrocyclic ligands to yield a new series of hybrid-polyoxovanadates.
