We are interested in understanding the interaction of NO with late first row transition metals, such as nickel and copper. In particular, we are trying to elucidate the range of chemical transformations that are possible for the nitrosyl moiety in these metals. Previously we reported that addition of bipy to the nickel nitrosyl, [Ni(NO)(bipy)][PF6] (1 ), induces reduction of the bound nitrosyl ligand to N2O. In our efforts to further the chemistry of nickel nitrosyls we have also investigated the redox chemistry of 1 . Interestingly, the 1e- oxidation of 1  by 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) results in cleavage of the Ni�NO bond and generation of NO(g) in high yields. In contrast, addition of pyridine-N-oxide only results in formation of the adduct [Ni(NO)(bipy)(ONC5H5)][PF6] (2 ). The reactivity of 1  with other oxidants, including O2, will also be discussed.
