A series of tetradentate pyridyltriazoles, separated by xylylene spacers, have been synthesized by �click� reactions and their coordination properties with copper(II) studied. Ortho-xylylenebis(pyridyltriazole) undergoes self-assembly with Cu(II) forming a discrete cyclic binuclear complex of type [Cu2L2]4+ (Cu...Cu = 4.10 �). Each Cu center is square pyramidal, with two pyridyltriazole moieties in a trans arrangements, and solvent and anion in apical position. The meta isomer coordinates with copper in a similar way forming macrocyclic [Cu2L2]4+ (Cu...Cu = 8.85 �). The para isomer, on the other hand, gives polymeric network with Cu(BF4)2 or Cu(NO3)2 and a helical octahedral complex of type [M2L3]4+ with CuCl2. We are currently investigating the properties of analogous multidentate aminomethyltriazole ligands. We expect that these ligands, which are less bulky than the pyridyltriazoles, will chelate more readily to Cu(II).
