Zeolites represent a unique family of well ordered, microporous aluminosilicates which are important solid acid catalysts in industry.  One limitation to their broader application is their microporosity which restricts the range of substrates and products that can access the active sites in these materials and much effort has been put into finding mesoporous analogues to zeolitic systems.  We have developed a general method of incorporating a number of high valent metal atoms into silicate matrices while controlling their connectivity to the surrounding matrix.  Here we describe recent studies on how the porosity of these matrices changes as a function of the stoichiometric ratio between the linking atoms and the cubic silicate building block used to build up these amorphous matrices.  The porosity of these matrices can be tailored from micro- to meso- to macroporous simply by varying the ratio of linker to building block.
