Possible routes for recycling of lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries used in hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) have been and are currently being investigated, with an emphasis on lithium. The laboratory scale investigations include disassembly and characterization of lithium-ion prototype batteries, mechanical separation of Cu and Al battery substrates, Li leaching from electrode material as well as solvent extraction studies of the leachate using both batch- and AKUFVE-technique. The long-term goal of these and other investigations is to find possible ways for industrial scale HEV-battery recycling, that are scientifically and technically possible as well as environmentally and economically feasible.
