?A series of complexes of the type [M(9S3)(L)Cl](PF6) or [M(9S3)(L)2](PF6)2 where M = Pd or Pt, 9S3 = 1,4,7-trithiacyclononane, and L = trimethylphosphine (PMe3) or 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane (PTA) have been prepared and characterized. The mixed thioether/phosphine complexes are readily prepared from [M(9S3)Cl2] and either 1 or 2 equivalents of L followed by a methathesis with hexafluorophosphate anion. All complexes have been characterized by multi-nuclear NMR spectroscopy, which includes: 1H, 13C, 31P and 195Pt (where applicable). [Pt(9S3)(PMe3)2](PF6)2 and [M(9S3)(PTA)Cl](PF6) (M = Pd or Pt) have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction where the 9S3 ligand forms the anticipated elongated square pyramidal structure with one long Pd-S axial interaction at 2.83 �, 2.86 �, and 2.91 � respectively. Details on the preparation and characterization of these complexes, comparison to related 9S3-Pd and Pt complexes containing achiral and chiral phosphines, and future directions will be presented.
