The linear tertiary phosphine ligand rac- and meso-et,ph-P4-Ph (et,ph-P4-Ph = (Et2PC6H4)(Ph)PCH2P(Ph)(C6H4PEt2)) has been prepared and separated into its rac-  and meso- diastereomeric forms. Grignard mediated P-C coupling reaction has allowed for the facile synthesis of this new tetraphosphine ligand. Both rac- and meso- forms of et,ph-P4-Ph have been characterized by 1HNMR and 31P{1H}NMR spectroscopy. Reaction of 2 equivalents of NiCl2�6H2O with rac or meso-et,ph-P4-Ph produces rac- or meso-Ni2Cl4(et,ph-P4-Ph), in which et,ph-P4-Ph acts as both a chelating and a bridging ligand. The resulting bimetallic Ni complexes have been characterized via 1HNMR and 31P{1H}NMR spectroscopy. The solid-state structures of each complex are also reported.
