Reduced uranium species are of interest for potential applications in long term nuclear waste storage.  Preparing reduced uranium containing compounds and,  especially, the crystal growth of U(IV) containing materials is a challenge due to the need both to stabilize and to solubilize U(IV) species in a solution environment.  We have developed a reliable, low temperature hydrothermal approach, based on using U(IV) oxalate precursors, to grow crystals of U(IV) containing mixed metal oxalates. Crystals are obtained in essentially quantitative yield and the new series Na2U2M(C2O4)6(H2O)4 (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Zn) was synthesized, structurally characterized and the magnetic properties investigated.  The mixed metal oxalates contain both U(IV) f2 and M2+ transition metals (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Zn) that are d5, d6, d7, and d10, respectively.  Using the zinc compound, the magnetic moment of U(IV) was readily measured and used for the analysis of the other transition metal containing oxalates.  The crystal growth method, crystal structures and magnetic properties will be presented.
